No they are a nut. They are only really edible in Autumn. Acorn season is around September or when Conkers appear. My mum grew up at a time when people did starve, so can cook and eat anything. I used to collect acorns for her as a kid. They are better as a food for livestock, pigs love them. read more

Some oak species produce acorns every year while other species produce acorns every two years. The acorns from "2-year" species are said to be even more bitter. read more
