Do other planets have magnetic fields?

Best Answers

Do other planets have magnetic fields like our Earth? It is great that our Earth possesses a magnetic field because it protects us from harmful particles in the solar wind. The Earth's magnetic field curves outward near the South Pole, turns upward, and reenters the Earth near the North Pole. read more

Only two planets have no permanent magnetic field. In order: Mercury has a magnetic field. It's not super strong (possibly because it rotates fairly slowly), but it does exist. Venus does not have a magnetic field. We're fairly sure the core is liquid metal, so for some time scientists believe it lacked a magnetic field because it rotated too slowly. read more

The magnetic fields act like giant bar magnets and can be offset from the rotation axis of a planet. For example, the Earth’s magnetic field is tilted about 11 degrees to the axis of rotation. Magnetic fields protect a planet from the charged particles streaming out from the Sun in the form of the solar wind. read more

There are, however, planets where different parts are magnetized differently, such that there is no single global dipole magnetic field. Mars, for example. But Mars does still have a magnetic field- it's just a complicated one derived from the inherent magnetizations of different parts of its crust, rather than simple one derived from an overpowering central planetary dynamo. read more
