Omaha beach was cleaned over a period of 5 years. The sand was sifted to a depth of 3 ft, so you won’t normally find anything on the beach. The wrecks in the sea were cleared away by salvage men. One had the idea of making a museum called the wrecks museum at Port EnBessin. There are some wrecks left on the sea bed . read more
However, in order to rapidly move to the crucial port of Cherbourg, a landing on the Cotentin was needed, and omitting Omaha Beach would have left a huge gap between Utah Beach on the one hand, and Gold, Juno and Sword on the other hand. read more
