Your actuarial training, per se, is irrelevant. What’s relevant are your problem solving ability and leadership potential. These make a good consultant. McKinsey at least has less experience with hiring actuaries and so some recruiters may not be able to adequately evaluate your resume and pick up on indicators of your potential. read more

While McKinsey might hire a senior actuary who really impresses them, I doubt it's common and I wouldn't count on that as a career path. If you want to do management consulting long term, it would be easiest to take the more comon path as you outlined above (work for them, get an MBA, come back). read more
