Does plate tectonics make Earth become smaller or bigger?

Best Answers

Neither, there is a balance between crust lost to subduction ( destructive margin) and new crust formed at locations like the mid Atlantic ridge and the Nazca/Pacific boundary ( constructive margin). read more

Plate tectonics don’t make the Earth smaller or larger. Plate tectonics aren’t even moving around really, they are staying in the same place but adjusting themselves to pressures from different sources. The Earth is getting larger and larger though through the reproduction cycle of plants and animals. read more

Venus and Earth are on the threshold of just large enough to support plate tectonics on its own. But Venus has no water. Hydrated minerals are what lubricates the motion of the plates on Earth, allowing them to slide past, over and under one another. read more

Earth's mass has remained constant, and thus the gravitational pull at the surface has decreased over time. Earth's mass has grown with the volume in such a way that the surface gravity has remained constant. Earth's gravity at its surface has increased over time, in line with its hypothesized growing mass and volume. read more
