Shanghai does have beaches due to being on the coast, but they are all very far from the city center and are not remotely attractive. Plus it would probably be unsafe to swim in the water. I know there is one “artificial beach” along the southern coast in Jinshan district, that I’ve been to which was kinda nice. read more

Qingdao has some really good beaches, but that is not drivable IMO, you would need to take a train or fly, flight is only about 1.5 hours. (The sailing events for the Olympics are being held there.) Sanya referred to above is on Hainan island, the “Hawaii” of China and does have some very nice beaches. read more
