Like all of the “outer boroughs” (Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island), there are “downtowns” spread all over. It's never very far to walk, or bus, to a shopping area where you can get just about anything, often including a movie theater and a branch of Macy's or some other big store, and some restaurants. read more

Historically, The Hub is located in the heart of the South Bronx, around the intersection of E. 149th St., and 3rd, Willis, and Melrose Aves., was the Bronx’s “downtown.” With its easy bus and rail access, The Hub was replete with theaters, restaurants, stores, offices and, before radio became popular, lecture halls. read more

Mercantile efforts to promote the South Bronx as "Downtown Bronx" have met with little success. In some North American cities, downtown is the formal name of the neighborhood in which the city's central business district is located. read more

In Queens (and Bronx), trains that head towards Manhattan are downtown. Those that head deeper into Queens (or Bronx) are uptown. BTW - NYers never ID the route by the colors good for easy recognition on the subway map but we always call the train by the letter or number. read more
