Mt Rainier has one of the highest prominence in the lower 48. That is the amount it rises form it's base, 13,211 feet. To put it in perspective, K2 has a topographic prominence of 13,189 feet. Because the Cascades are directly to the north, many places to the north you cannot see it because other mountains get in the way. read more

If you go to the lookout at the top of Larch Mountain you can see a good number of the peaks of Western Oregon and Washington, it is quite a spectacular view. Rainier is still within visible site, but gets confused with Mt Adams , which actually looks bigger from the Larch Mountain lookout, since it is closer. read more
