Has a US State ever split into multiple states?

There are three instances of a US state being split: Kentucky was split off of Virginia, Maine off of Massachusetts, and West Virginia off of Virginia. Politicians in the South Florida metropolitan area have made proposals to split Florida into two states - North Florida and South Florida. One such proposal was made in 2008 by the North Lauderdale commissioners. read more
