The last time the US knowingly used child soldiers on a mass scale was the US Civil War, when children as young as 8 years old joined the ranks ( Child Soldiers in the Civil War). They were usually employed as drummers and other non-combatant positions - although they were frequently just as exposed to rifle and artillery fire as adult soldiers on the firing line. read more
