The Marshall Islands are atolls (barely above sea level). Atolls are a type of island that was built up over time around volcanos consisting of coral reefs. Over time the volcano erodes forming a shallow lagoon, the reef builds up becoming sand and passing debris adds to the sand creating dirt. read more
