Romeo is banished for defying the Prince’s edict and dueling with Tybalt. He actually got off easy because he killed Tybalt, and the punishment the Prince had declared for that was death. But Benvolio pled the case that Tybalt had first killed Mercutio, and Romeo was only avenging Mercutio’s death, so the Prince banished him instead. read more
