The salt deposit in Wieliczka formed in the Miocene Epoch, 13.6 million years ago. The Miocene period abounded in substantial transformations in the geological structure of the Earth’s crust. As a result of colliding tectonic plates new mountain ranges were formed, among them – the Carpathians. read more

Salt mines are formed when humans discover large salt deposits and begin excavating them. Salt deposits, however, are formed when large bodies of salty water form and then dry up. Lakes and ponds become salty over time if there is no where for the water to go after it collects other than evaporating. read more
