First, which seems obvious, but many don't understand: do not take a GRFD or Minuteman Scholarship. They lock you into the Reserve Component. Even Cadets at CLC this summer were asking how to go Active if they had one of these scholarships. read more

So, although both ROTC and the Academies commission cadets as Army Second Lieutenants, ROTC does so into the Reserve Component (with possible Assignment into Extended Active Duty), while West Point commissions cadets directly and only into the Active Duty Component of the US Army. read more
