Prior to the invention of the telegraph, meteorology wasn’t a science. It is only by gathering as many as possible observations from remote places, that a synoptic map (chart) can be drawn and, the future weather, predicted. A synoptic map shows, from all observations, lines of equal pressure (isobars) and equal temperature (isotherms).
