These deposits are a limited resource, they don't get replenished after you pump the water out, and when they're gone, they're gone. People can and do drill wells into these deposits, use them up, and just move onto the next one. read more

When either of those happen, you can absolutely places where there was once a river, but it's run out of water. But, as long as the rain keeps falling and the ground stays unchanged, the river is going to keep flowing. read more
