I believe it was the staple diet of wheat and barley which one could safely assume that they were on predominantly a grain diet. read more

A diet of grain and beans was fairly common among the civilian population of the day as well but it is thought that the gladiators may have been barley eaters which is a lower quality of grain than the general population would have normally consumed (unless poor). read more
