He was born in Leeuwarden, Holland in 1898, and when he was in school his family planned for him to follow his father's career of architecture. MC Escher didn’t necessarily use math, but he understood it. I’m not sure why the other answer completely dismisses his use. Surely every artist uses math in some way. Escher understood the Frieze Groups and Crystallographic groups. read more
