Sparks has been writing since college. By the time he graduated he had written two novels (both unpublished). After college, he was unable to publish and unable to get into law school. He continue to write. He attempted careers in real estate, phone sales, waiting tables, and manufacturing, and he kept writing. Sparks city-authored a book in 1990. read more

Nicholas was the second of three children, with an older brother, Michael Earl "Micah" Sparks (born 1964), and a younger sister, Danielle "Dana" Sparks (1966–2000), who died at the age of 33 from a brain tumor.
