Mozart fulfilled a lot of commissions early in his career. But his music went right over the heads of his aristocratic patrons, and thus many of them lost interest in him. By 1781, when he settled in Vienna, he was almost entirely on his own, as maybe the first truly independent composer in musical history. read more
