A compromise was found (i.e. the Missouri compromise) that admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state so the balance of power in the senate was maintained. This effected Massachusetts because Maine prior to 1820 was a part of Massachusetts and in order for the compromise to go forward Massachusetts had to give up sovereignty over Maine. read more

It admitted Maine, the northern region of what was then Massachusetts, into the Union as a separate (free) state. The reason this was done was to balance the number of "slave states" and "free states."
