How did the term 'squids' for US Navy sailors originate?

This is a no shi++er: (Which means its the God's honest, truth.) During WWII, sailors called Marines (and only Marines) "Jarheads". After considering the term for a few years, the Marines thought "Jarhead" was a term of endearment. read more

As a Sailor, I called the Marines “Jarheads” and they called us “Squids”. If you want to pi$$ off a Marine just tell him to turn over his Miltary ID card. It clearly reads, “Department of the United States Navy”. read more
