Of course space flight would have been vastly harder if the atmosphere did not run out relatively close to Earth. The speeds needed for orbit would burn up a spacecraft through friction with the air if it was anything like the level needed for a human to survive in it. read more

Jules Verne wrote a story about travelling to the moon in the 1860's and I would figure that he would have no way of figuring that there was no oxygen in space (though he did seem to think there was no life on the moon). read more
