UCLA originally wasn't on my radar. I hated high school. I took Honors and AP classes and hated the competition and arrogance that some of the students exhibited. I did “well” but not “great” in my opinion. Math was my achilles heel. read more

Exactly - gotta get lucky. My dtr has a 3.95 uw, 4.7 weighted, 150+ hospital volunteer hours, lots of leadership, paid tutoring jobs in TWO languages (Spanish, Hebrew) etc, etc. She did NOT get into UCLA her #1 choice, but she did get into Berkeley and does not want to go there. Though my numbers alone would have put me into the acceptance range for UCLA, my soft factors like volunteering and my essay pushed me into the top range. For added background, of the colleges I applied to in the same range as UCLA, I was also accepted to UC Berkeley but did not get offered the equivalent of the Regent’s Scholarship there. read more
