Being a German WWII vet is definitely nothing like being an American WWII vet. People don't look up to vets; in fact even serving in the present-day German military will make some Germans think less of you. read more

Quite a few kept a low profile to avoid fighting (and they got threatened, too). In contrast, I've got friends who married Germans and got German in-laws (decorated). Most of them have put the War behind them and made small fortunes for their kids inheritance. Like Vets everywhere, they do gather to toast old dead departed friends and decry the war. read more

I know Germany is, at large, ashamed of their actions during WW2. Holocaust denial is illegal, and it is a very touchy subject among the German populace. read more

Fun fact: the number of casualties in the Civil War still outnumbers all other American casualties in wars combined. That ~600,000 may not seem like much compared to the Soviet Union or Poland in World War II, but this was before the advent of large-scale explosives so it's actually pretty horrific. read more
