Key Largo is closest to the mainland, is more laid back, and John Pennekamp State Park is there. If you were pressed on time, you could visit Key Largo and say you were at "the keys. " But Key West is definately worth the drive. read more

Smathers beach is the big public beach in Key West on the south side of the island. It is not very walkable from Duval street, you would have to drive. To me the upper/middle Keys mean watersports, diving, snorkeling, fishing, boating, etc. Key West is eclectic, strange, wonderful, but very adult oriented. Lot's of partying, drinking, and eating. read more
