The ionosphere is the lower portion of the thermosphere. The northern and southern lights (aurora) are generated within the ionosphere. I think my major professors might frown at this simplistic explanation. read more

The thermosphere is the upper portion of the atmosphere beginning at roughly 80 km and extending to the end of the magnetosphere. That is not a good ending as the magnetosphere has a poorly defined "end". The ionosphere is defined as roughly 80-500 km. The ionosphere is the lower portion of the thermosphere. read more
