Armor was effective a well made gambeson is fairly cut proof. a chainmaille even more so. they wont make you totally sword safe of course but most other weapons would be more effective against it than swords. read more

Against a full plate armor in melee only halberds, warhammers, pollaxes and other heavy pole weapons would be effective. Blunt damage could stupify and sometimes kill through plate. Thats why maces are more effective against plate than swords. read more
