How hot is Pluto's interior?

Just like any other planets, Pluto changes its temperatures extremely. At its warmest, when it is closest to the sun, Pluto can reach temperatures of minus 369 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 223 degrees Celsius). read more

Pluto is made up of a rocky core surrounded by ices. New Horizons revealed a very young surface, suggesting that the dwarf planet remained warm enough to host a liquid ocean within its interior. Pluto lies in a region known as the Kuiper Belt, a collection of icy rocks left over from the formation of the solar system. read more

Pluto, however, doesn't orbit any major planets in close proximity, so this won't be the case. We don't know how much of that residual heat is still avaliable in Pluto, however the New Horizon probe gave us evidence (The Icy Mountains of Pluto) that Pluto may have been geologically active in the last 100 million years or less, which could potentially mean that it has enough heat to keep it alive. read more
