How is World War II history taught in Germany?

It is definitely much closer to "A dark part of our history" than to "We lost". Because if it would be "We lost", it would kinda imply that modern-day Germans identify themselves with a nazi regime, which they clearly don´t! World War II was a preventable war. Germany, Japan and Italy were the essential culprits.
