Grasshoppers use the X0/XX system of biological sex, in that males have a single X chromosome by itself. Females have two X chromosomes. read more

Another way to look at it is that the grasshopper needs to segregate one of each of their chromosomes into the sperm. Because there are 12 chromosomes in the sperm, it means that the grasshopper has 12 pairs of chromosomes. They would therefore have 12x2 chromosomes, or 24 chromosomes in total. read more
