In a diesel engine 1 or 2 fuel pump has been used. It is depending upon the engine by cylinder are used in engine .so I think the 1 or 2 depend on engine. Diesel engine injectors used this one of the pump for injection fuel inside the cylinder.for high pressurized fuel inject so need one extra pump. read more
