His descendants are alive in many humans today. Of course, the actual Neanderthal specimens are long gone, much like the auroch, the ancester of all cattle alive today. In that sense, you could say that many species are no longer around, hence extinct. read more

I would consider the Neanderthals and Denisovans to be extreme races of Homo sapiens rather than separate species, since they were fully interfertile with us, and they both became extinct as separate groups although many of their genes were passed on in the general population. read more
