The moons of Saturn are numerous and diverse, ranging from tiny moonlets less than 1 kilometer across to the enormous Titan, which is larger than the planet Mercury. Saturn has 62 moons with confirmed orbits, 53 of which have names and only 13 of which have diameters larger than 50 kilometers, as well as dense rings with complex orbital motions of their own. read more
But during its many years in Saturn orbit, NASA’s Cassini spacecraft discovered previously unknown moons, solved mysteries about known ones, studied their interactions with the rings and uncovered new mysteries—including the discovery on an ocean moon with potential ingredients for life—that will engage a whole new generation of space scientists. read more
Some of Saturn's smaller moons help keep Saturn's rings stable by orbiting in or near the rings. These moons are called "shepherd moons" and use their gravity to keep the small ring particles in a stable orbit. Some of the gaps in Saturn's rings are caused by these moons. read more
