In ice hockey 6 players are allowed on the ice per team. 5 of those players are skaters and 1 a goaltender unless they decide to pull the goaltender and have 6 skaters and no goaltender. This usually only happens near the end of the 3rd period. read more
At the highest level of ice hockey - the National Hockey League (NHL), "Opening Day Playing Roster" shall be comprised of not more than 23 players. Each Club must have a roster of at least 20 players, composed of 18 skaters and two goaltenders. read more
