Great tracts of Liverpool in the early 1970s, particularly in the area south and east of the University, were empty spaces criss-crossed by paved streets where houses had once stood; for legal reasons the houses had been demolished but the pub on the corner of each block still stood. It made a bizarre cityscape. Pubs are generally in decline. read more
