There are 48 volcanoes around New Zealand. Actually there are over 60 active, dormant and extinct volcanoes in New Zealand, and 48 in the Auckland region. There are two currently active volcanoes in New Zealand, Ruapehu and White Island, and another, Ngaruahoe, that has been active in the last 50 years. read more

If you include extinct volcanoes, there are lots more. The city of Auckland alone has 44 volcanic cones. Coastal Otago has about 25, and seven of New Zealand’s 14 cities are built at least partly on volcanic soil. read more
