A really important point here is that the old claim of 'diamonds are just high pressure coal' is complete hogswash. Coal is a product of preserved organic matter, exposed to moderate temepratures and pressures within the crust. It is mostly carbon. And yes, diamond is an ultra-high pressure allotrope of carbon. read more
