In this country, I've only ever heard them addressed by their name, usually their first name for assistant or lower ranked Black-belts, and the last name, for senior or Head Instructors, and the English, “Sir.” Mr. Steve, Sir! - For in-class instructors. Most Aikido schools also have a picture of Aiko's founder on the wall, and many gyms of western martial arts, such as boxing or wrestling, have gym founders and/or famous gym members up on the wall. It's a form of lineage and paying respect to those who have gone before and laid the foundation you're walking on. read more
