How was Pripyat affected during the Chernobyl disaster?

While I'm not a survivor nor a person who intensely researched this, I did recently happen to read up on the disaster and the nearby city, mostly because the fact that there exists a ghost town that was once highly populated intrigued me a lot. read more

Chernobyl was largely abandoned following the disaster at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant located 14.5 kilometres (9 miles) away. Ukraine was part of the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) on the 26th April 1986 when the disaster occurred. read more

The disaster began during a systems test on 26 April 1986 at reactor 4 of the Chernobyl plant near Pripyat and in proximity to the administrative border with Belarus and the Dnieper River. There was a sudden and unexpected power surge. read more
