How will we know when Voyager 1 and 2 cross the Oort cloud?

We won't. Long before either of the probes reaches the area where we expect the Oort Cloud, they will have ceased to function. In fact, it is estimated that within the next 10–15 years, the probes will not have enough power to run any of their scientific instruments and be considered essentially dead. read more

Yes they will, in about 6000 years. As neither will be operating then and the Oort cloud is not a well defined region we would say that in 6000 years it’s the Oort cloud. read more

Voyager hasn't even entered the Oort Cloud at all yet. It is estimated that the Oort Cloud could be up to two Light years thick, and it would take Voyager 1 up to 40,000 years to go that far. read more

NASA scientists have estimated that Voyager 1 will emerge from the Oort Cloud in 14,000 to 28,000 years. The craft launched in September 1977, about two weeks after its twin, Voyager 2. The probes embarked upon a "grand tour" of the outer solar system, giving the world some its first good looks at Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and the moons of these planets. read more
