A loud booming sound, but could be a very loud crack that even can hurt your ears if it is close enough. it is said that if you count the number of seconds--between when you see lightning and hear the sound of thunder--the number of seconds is equal to the number of miles away the lightning actually is. however, i'm not totally sure, and it might just be an urban myth but still it probably makes for a pretty good rule of thumb. read more
