If octopi were social, could they be the humans of the ocean?

Scientifically both octopus (plural) and octopi are accepted terms. Octopods is an accepted term when refering to multiple species of octopus. Octopuses is not scientifically accepted unless refering to multiple octopus from multiple soecies. Such as the distinction between fish,fish, and fishes.
