If they were social they would still have some major hurdles to overcome: They have a very short lifespan which limits the amount of experiences to which they have access thus limiting their accumulation of knowledge. Scientifically both octopus (plural) and octopi are accepted terms. Octopods is an accepted term when refering to multiple species of octopus. Octopuses is not scientifically accepted unless refering to multiple octopus from multiple soecies. Such as the distinction between fish,fish, and fishes.
