According to Greek mythology, one look at Medusa's face could turn someone to stone. Perseus was able to get around this by only looking at Medusa's reflection in his shield. He slew the Gorgon and used her head to save the princess Adromeda by turning the Kraken to stone. read more

Medusa thought herself to be more beautiful than any goddess, even Athena. When Athena found out about this, she turned Medusa into a monster that no one would want to look at.
