Is Bavaria really the Texas of Germany?

Bavaria has three things in common with Texas. 1) Bavaria never actually signed the German constitution, although Bavaria's government has ruled that the German constitution shall apply to Bavaria in instances where there is a conflict of laws. read more

2) Bavaria is in the south of Germany, as Texas is in the south of the U.S. 3) Bavarians, like Texans, have a distinctive culture (which seems to be mistaken by Americans as “German culture” even though it is not). read more

In Bavaria, clothes really do make the man. Texas has its iconic cowboy kit with leather chaps, denim and ten-gallon hat; Bavaria uses leather differently – to make shorts. Hard-wearing, long-lasting and a good use for all the spare cowhide they have up in there, lederhosen have become iconic German dress much in the same way as Western dress and culture is shorthand for the rugged American man. read more

Bavaria is a big state in terms of the area, but only the second in terms of population (there are more people in Nordrhein-Westfalen). Most hotbeds for industry and high tech companies are in the Munich area. read more
