Consumer goods do not produce more consumer goods -- they enable consumers to meet their needs and wants. If capitalism is a social system that allows individuals to dispense with their capital as they please, then it is not synonymous with your definition of consumerism. read more
Some nations did attempt to create consumerism without capitalism. Economist generally agree, if an invention is consistently desired, it will attract people, groups (investors) to develop mass production of the product to sell to a mass market to create sufficient profit that can be distributed to its owner's. read more
