I think that Charles Dickens had both great strengths and great weaknesses as a writer. Strengths: * Told some great stories. * Created some great characters. * Wrote about situations that were never or seldom addressed in polite fiction. read more
Charles Dickens is not overrated, but then again, I guess it is a subjective question. Dickens has given us some of the greatest books and even greater characters of all times. I think that his books do consist of some unnecessary elucidations, but then again, life isn’t really a movie at all times. read more

Apparently, when Dickens did it, it was art. What Dickens has going for him is the sheer quantity of texts, yet even this is not unique. Trollope, Thackeray, Gaskell all published a similar amount and more, but these aren't the writers who get a BBC six-part adaptation every other Christmas. read more
