Only some stocks are cross-listed between the TSX and NYSE/NASDAQ/(US Markets). If you need to trade a particular security and it is only listed in one location without a proxy elsewhere, then you will need to trade through a broker that connects directly to that exchange. read more

Inter-listed stocks with the same CUSIP number are exactly the same stock whether traded in New York or Toronto. My data is probably out of date but there is/was about 55 Canadian stocks that have chosen to list in New York in addition to the Toronto exchange. BMO is exactly the same as BMO.TO. read more

For example, if I have 10K in US dollars, it's better for me to buy SLF on the NYSE than to exchange it to CAD and buy it on the TSX. That sounds like an incredibly stupid thing to do, unless you're specifically in the business, with some sort of automated system, to engage in such arbitrage. read more
