Is it possible to build a CPU by soldering it?

I think the other responders are not seeing the full depth of the meaning of "CPU", and only seeing the current technlogy and scale. It is perfectly possible today to go out and buy a bunch of 7400 series gates, or even a bag of surplus transtors and diodes, and solder yourself up a nice little 8 bit CPU. read more

It should be quite possible to build a 4 or even 8 bit ALU/CPU by soldering components. It will take time and effort, and real estate and a good reason. Within living memory, we wound core memory by hand. read more

The Indium solder sheet is sitting between heatspreader and DIE. The DIE is covered with 3 layers made out of titanium, nickel+vanadium and gold. The soldering temperature has to be around 170 °C. Lower might result in a bad soldering connection and too high temperatures will damage the CPU permanently or result in a bad yield rate. read more

Soldering them on the board would actually be impossible without a factory that can bake the PCBs for you. The list goes on and on with things that would be hard to acquire for a one-off laptop. Unless you buy a barebone kit (which don't exist anymore) it is simply not possible to build your own laptop. Period. read more
