Is it possible to easily get mica flecks out of the dirt?

This might work... Screen your dirt down to about 1/4” into a clean (no soap!) bucket. Grab your gold pan, dump about a cup of material in it, and add enough water to cover the dirt plus an inch or so. Give it a good shake and some of the mica should float to the surface. Why no soap? read more

Making sure your dirt is really dry, I'd use some seives and sort it out that way. All the clay will pass through the larger mesh seives, and though you might have some other grains left, the mica should be easier to pick out. Or at that point, you could try one of the other methods as well. read more

The specific gravity of mica is; 1.6-2.8 while gold has a specific gravity of 15.5-19.29, which means that mica is much lighter than gold and should wash out of your pan or sluice box quite easily. In an alluvial setting, mica tends to get ground up into thin powder like sheets that are highly reflective and get deposited near or on the surface of the stream bed. read more
